On sait que le gouvernement britannique a fait rédiger par différents auteurs et publier par HMSO une très officielle History of the Second World War, tant du point de vue civil (U.K. Civil Series, edited by W.K. Hancock) que diplomatique et militaire (U.K. Military Series, edited by J.R.M. Butler). Le volume de cette série qui a le plus marqué l'historiographie subséquente est sans conteste :

- Titmuss, Richard. Problems of Social Policy. 1950 [Le titre cryptique ne permet pas de deviner qu'il s'agit d'une étude exhaustive des problèmes liés à la "protection civile " en temps de guerre, au premier chef l'évacuation et l'organisation médicale et hospitalière. On peut dire que ce livre "lance" la théorie de la Seconde Guerre mondiale facteur de prise de conscience de la nécessité de la réforme sociale, très attaquée aujourd'hui par les "révisionnistes". A consulter en toute priorité.]
